Regretfully Joan is the worst counsellor I have had the misfortune to come across. I understand a goodness of fit and approach is required in the counselling relationship, but there appeared to be no attempt on her part to sustain, engender or develop a trusting transaction. In my life I have used four to five different counsellors but this was the only time that not only was I not helped, but I was actually felt harmed. Everything I said and did was wrong and she consistenly misunderstood the issues. In addition, she made assumptions and dealt judgement which I had to defend several times. She referred to the things taught to them on counselling courses as a load of crap. This begs the question, on what authority or rationale does she then deliver her method?. I felt judged, humiliated and angry. I also felt as counselling progressed she would actually say things as a punishment for either not liking me or that I may have been a difficult client (i don't believe I was). One of the issues I felt was that she didn't like men and found it difficult to leave behind the fact that she was a woman. I do have one friend who found her good and another who had a strikingly similar experience. She was not for. Sorry if this sounds harsh, but counsellors are dealing with vulnerable people and owe their clients unconditional positive regard.
